This fact made making a big push for it as if it was the scientifically assured form of herd immunity and the only possible option a bit of a stretch.
It was clear that whole population vaccination was the officially decided upon policy throughout the pandemic even though there was no demonstration to support any reduction in transmission at the outset, no phase three evidence, and later still just proxy measures, which themselves are notoriously unreliable even when reasonably assumed to be evidence.

And on top of this, the drugs were a sharp departure from previous vaccines. It was absurd to push something with no long term safety profile for something indirect when direct targeting was obviously available.

And the purported virulence of COVID suggested that many of us had already acquired protection, or might be expected to in record time. Absolutely nothing about the push made sense.
Any air of conventional wisdom was necessarily fabricated not just because this technology had no long term human testing and an absurdly recent history of what stat referred to as “nasty” effects in test subjects, but because even in the broader field of inoculation in general, we had no precedent for a widely successful vaccine for a coronavirus.

These nucleotide shots were arguably the most invasive treatment in history, and their lab resumes were remarkably unsetting and I just felt like we’d sort of skipped a lot of the courtship period before giving the manufacturers the green light with no further liability.
Maybe I’m old fashioned but before I let someone put a drug inside me, they have to make some level of commitment.
And that drug has to spend several years showing me it’s not crazy first.

Outside of the few months of industry sponsored trials in which adverse events really were substantially more common and pronounced than was normally the case for vaccinations, which was underscored by the fact that some of the trials even used established vaccines as the placebo (https://www.astrazeneca.com/media-centre/press-releases/2020/azd1222hlr.html, https://www.wired.com/story/covid-19-vaccines-with-minor-side-effects-could-still-be-pretty-bad/), the next available metric for obtaining some sort of signal about adverse events was the CDC’s Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System, or VAERS, and while it was a voluntary reporting mechanism estimated to receive less than 1% of adverse events in total by HHS funded research, the figures were already sobering.

As former New York Times reporter Alex Berenson surmised from the publicly available data, VAERS fatality reports for COVID vaccinations were in mid February 1 death reported per 35k shots or 10k completed vaccinations, whereas for flu inoculations it was 1 death per 9 million.

He ran the figures again in mid March, at which point there’d been 110 million shots but really 40 million full vaccinations, and with the reported deaths approaching 2000 at the time, vaccination for vaccination, COVID vaccines were consistently corresponding to reports of several hundred times the number of deaths as the rate of those for influenza.

Of course, it was plausible and even likely that people were more likely to report issues for COVID vaccines than they had been for flu shots, but a little bit of math quickly revealed that that wasn’t likely to make up the difference.
Say for instance, that awareness of VAERS had been 1% before all of this, and now it was as high as 100%. Nobody believes this; but just for the sake of argument, let’s say awareness of VAERS had increased 100 fold.
If that was the case, and we were still seeing an increase in reported fatalities that was several hundred times greater than that of other vaccines, then these new COVID vaccines would still be remarkably more dangerous than previous vaccination methods.
And anyone who looks into the bedeviled history of these drugs would not be the least bit surprised to find that.
It’s a well documented fact that both the adenovirus vectors and the mRNA class had historically been hamstrung by the propensity to cause severe reactions in test subjects.

The third is its high immunogenicity, which while potentially advantageous in vaccine settings, can be problematic if we don’t know how to control it. Accustomed to RNA virus invasions, cells have evolved an arsenal of sensors to detect different flavours of mRNA that don’t quite look like cellular. For instance, small contaminations with double stranded RNA are potent triggers of an interferon response, which in only few hours activates a number of proteins entirely dedicated at chopping down the mRNA itself. Even more problematic is the fact that our understanding of how innate immunity modulates adaptive immunity is not quite complete, and while the innate immunity is well known to be crucial for the establishment of an effective cellular response, it has also been shown to trigger immune-regulatory mechanisms that can shut the immune response down. What this depends on is not quite clear, and for this reason, hard to control.

The stat article mentioned earlier about the field’s tribulations was as recent as 2017. The field was still considered something of a wildcard in terms of safety, efficacy, and viability. Whatever was pulled off was pulled off merely in the last few years.
And the idea that we could roll it out on everyone in such a short period of time with no unforeseen issues was one of those things that any reasonable person remotely familiar with the pharmaceutical industry would be wary of being too good to be true.

The problem, Afeyan said, has been that the body sees foreign mRNA as dangerous.
Moderna is further away from commercialization than are most companies worth far less, as it still does not have a single drug candidate in human clinical trials.
And let’s be blunt, VAERS awareness has not gone up to such a level. How many peoples’ parents would know to report to VAERS if something had happened to one of them? My estimation was still not many.

Perhaps, I reasoned, it was the age of the recipients that was making the difference. But a little bit of sleuthing quickly revealed that this simply was not an adequate explanation.
VAERS allows for searches by age demographics, and as a result, it was readily available that COVID vaccines had been linked to more death reports than all vaccines combined in the last two decades not just in total, but in every age category in which they’d been widely distributed.
They had more death reports than all other vaccines combined over the last 20 years in the category of 65 years and up, in the category of 60 years of age to 64, in the category of 50 to 59, in the category of 40 to 49, in the category 30 to 39, and in category 18 to 29 they were gaining at a blistering pace as authorities inexplicably kept calling unsusceptible young people to get these new experimental drugs

Given the data as it stood, I didn’t find it plausible that these were not a sharp departure from the fatality risk associated with previous vaccines.
And if one merely bothered to read the particulars of the reports of these associated fatalities, they’d find they were very often of events that followed shortly after vaccination, within mere hours or a couple days, and with little else in the way of what would have served as an explanation.

As world class cardiologist Peter McCullough MD PMH had said, “On March 8 the CDC announced on their website with very little fanfare, that they had reviewed about 1,600 deaths with unnamed FDA doctors and they indicated not a single death was related to the vaccine…I have chaired and participated in dozens of data safety monitoring boards and sat on those committees and I can tell you that this type of work would have taken many months to review all the labs, the death certificates and all the circumstances of an event. I found the whole thing astounding from the explanation-defying numbers alone. Why was the CDC being so cavalier about these blatantly correlative figures? Why did we have to pretend the pharmaceutical industry had invented herd immunity?
Why was the answer always barrel forward with a novel vaccine?
Before we even had proxy indications about transmission? Vaccinate.

Of note, both Pfizer and Moderna reported that pregnant rats given their vaccines lost substantially more fetuses than those given a placebo –twice as many for Pfizer, and more than 2.3 times as many for Moderna. And I should probably be saying nontraditionally vaccinate, because nucleotide injection vaccines were your not your grandmother’s MMR shot.
In the Pfizer study for teens, the ratio of serious adverse events in the vaccinated group to the control group was 4 events to 1. Would that be trivial on a large scale? Did anyone know?

And any short term indications aside, this was all without knowing what might be the as-yet-undetermined or underestimated long term effects of what was effectively a first time to market technology.
Any unforeseen long term issues whatsoever would be afflicting young people for the rest of their lives.

And the dearth of information that we were supposed to be making this judgement on was outright appalling. For the most part, it appeared I was going to have to make do with glib press releases from companies whose executives kept selling off massive holdings at every big announcement like snake oil salesman hedging their bets on the off chance it turned out to be venom.

Maybe because they knew what I knew, which was that human cells are like poorly understood supercomputers that we were about to treat like a bunch of cheap printers.

At this point, I pumped the brakes. I thought “This sounds like a conspiracy theory, and the media would tell me I’m not listening to the science.”
I put my pen down and stopped trying to figure out whether the prospect of getting 7 billion people on a recurring vaccine schedule with a more versatile drug technology had the revenue potential to exercise inordinate sway. Sure, 7 billion times 20 years of patent protection times almost any dollar figure has a T in it, but I’m sure nobody in these industries or industry obeisant organizations would be lured to capitalize on a crisis by thinking that way.
